Demonstratie Arnhem, 09-06-2024
Many topics have already been mentioned by previous speakers, and capturing this in words is a difficult task. It’s nearly impossible to find the right words to explain why so many of us are gathered here today. It’s not because the situation is supposedly ‘complex’. No, it’s because the situation is so extremely unjust, unlawful, and goes beyond all imagination and recognition.
The images and videos we see every day, many of which you might prefer to look away from, are documented by true heroes: Palestinian press and reporters risking their own lives to document it all. Documentation of fathers giving their starving children a last farewell kiss. The wandering, solitary children who just minutes ago lost their parents in yet another bombing. The massive amounts of killings. Pregnant women forced to give birth to dead children in the most inhumane conditions we can’t even imagine. All these children in total despair. Even more than 4,000 IVF embryos have been destroyed. Why?
Famine is used as a weapon of mass destruction. Famine as a weapon of war. That’s what Israel does. And the Netherlands is simply looking at it, arms crossed… correction: the Netherlands is looking away from it. The red line is already very far out of sight. And let’s make no mistake: that red line is not out of sight because it keeps being pushed forward; that red line is out of sight because it was crossed much, much, way much earlier. The red line is far behind us, and has been for a very, very long time.
And the Netherlands and the Dutch government? I am ashamed, disappointed, disgusted by it really. The Netherlands continuously abstains from voting for a ceasefire and at the exact same time supplies heavy weaponry to Israel and finances Israeli war crimes. Furthermore, the Netherlands still doesn’t recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, and there are even politicians from extreme right-wing parties, like the PVV, denying the existence of Palestinian people. Literally tactics of colonization, which Israel isn’t even hiding anymore. The Netherlands totally fails to show its humanitarian side by fully ignoring all the pain and suffering of the people in Palestine. Didn’t we say “never again”…? We swore by these words. We swore… that’s past tense.
Because “Never again”… what does that even mean today? Never again… but only for those who look like us, think like us, talk like us… have the same skin color as us? According to extreme right-wing parties, it seems to be that way. I have no tolerance for intolerance. I have no tolerance for using vulnerable marginalized people for your racist views and racist agenda. Actually, it’s the other way around. It’s the marginalized people who have no other choice but to ‘tolerate’ this racism day in and day out.
Also, protesters, people who speak up against all this, are falsely being framed as anti-Semitic. The Dutch government is demonizing those that raise their voice against the oppression, violence, and murder of innocent people. But don’t let them gaslight you. Opposing Israeli government is simply not anti-Semitism.
It’s truly unbelievable that those brave people speaking out against the brutal murder of thousands upon thousands of Palestinians, men, women, and children, are met with greater force, with extreme violence even, than those responsible for the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people. I want to thank the students from Arnhem, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and all over the globe for raising their voices and calling out their university boards for their complicity in genocide. Students, you are the bravest of the brave. And shame on you Executive board of Radboud University! Shame!
I am proud of all the people who are gathered here this afternoon. Thank you for showing up for the people in Palestine. I know the feelings of despair and hopelessness and even total panic and depression can take over at times. But you matter. It matters that you are here, for the people in Palestine. I see you, we see you. Also, there are people who can’t be here today. Because for some people, showing up or speaking up can have very serious consequences. You’re not forgotten.
Don’t stop talking about Palestine.
Free Sudan, Free Congo, Free Haiti…Free Palestine…because all oppression is connected. We are all connected. And that’s exactly why: no one is free until we all are free.
